Thrifted Treasure Series Part 12 - Hand Painted China

If you're like many of us who admire the unique beauty of hand painted china, you're in for a treat! Vintage hand painted china pieces have become increasingly popular in recent years, with collectors and enthusiasts being drawn to their intricate designs and historical significance.

One of the most intriguing aspects of vintage hand painted china is the fact that they were often made by women as a craft. Many of these pieces were crafted during an era where women's creativity and talents were often overlooked and undervalued. As such, these pieces have become not only delightful collectibles but also objects of appreciation from an era of personal artistic expression.

Building a collection of vintage hand painted china dishes can be a rewarding hobby that adds a touch of elegance and uniqueness to your home. With so many exquisite pieces available, the possibilities for a one-of-a-kind collection are endless!

One of the best things about vintage hand painted china is its availability. You can find it everywhere!

First take a look in your mom or grandmother’s cupboard, you might be surprised at what you find!

Antique shops, estate sales, flea markets, and summer garage sales are also great places to start your hunt.

I was gifted most of these pieces but have also found “must have or can’t pass up” pieces while thrifting.

Serving bowls with pedestals are one of my favorite finds!

Keep an eye out for ornate candy dishes, charming berry bowls, and intricate serving dishes. These are just a few examples of the many shapes and styles you may find.

Dessert plates with matching coffee cups are also fun!

Notice how most of these have nature inspired designs!

Gravy boats can also double as a flower vase! Or…a place to hold your keys, toothbrush, or makeup. Think outside the dining table when looking at a function for these beautiful pieces.

If you look closely, many of the vintage pieces are signed by the artist.

Do you prefer bold and bright or a soft pastels?

When searching for vintage china, turn the piece over and look at the back marks.

These maker marks can tell you the age, origin, and maker of the piece you're considering. Some of the back marks are as interesting as the decorative fronts!

Don't be afraid to mix and match different patterns and colors; it can make a visually stunning display!

If you are overwhelmed by the possibilities…start small and look for pieces that are meaningful to you. Whether you choose to focus on a specific pattern, era or region, it's essential to build your collection around your preferences.

If you like berries or daisies…go for those…

…if you love lettuce…go for lettuce shapes!

Sets are also fun! This is a berry bowl set I inherited from my mom when she was downsizing…note that adorable pedestal!

Whether you're looking to start a collection or simply add a few unique pieces to your home, these are some of the most beautiful and elegant items you'll ever come across…and…they possess a rich history and cultural significance! Happy collecting.

I think previous generations believed we had to save the “good china” for special occasions! Let’s make everyday a SPECIAL OCCASION and really enjoy these unique pieces!
